Beijing

President Ma Ying-jeou says that if Beijing continues to block Taiwan in the international arena, it will hurt the development of cross-strait relations.
The president was speaking in a press conference on Tuesday. He was referring to a recent controversy surrounding Taiwan's designation in the World Health Organization (WHO). Media reports say that the WHO signed a memorandum with Beijing in 2005. That memorandum allegedly resulted in official WHO documents referring to Taiwan as a province of Mainland China.
Ma responded by saying that he had ordered the foreign ministry to lodge a strong protest with the WHO. He also said Taiwan wants to protest to the Chinese Communist Party for putting pressure on the global health body.
"In the past three years, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have worked hard to build mutual trust," said Ma. "There have been some positive results. Let's not destroy what we have achieved. I would like to stress that [the two sides] need to accumulate more mutual trust and create benefits for both sides. [Beijing's isolation of Taiwan] hurts the Taiwanese people's feelings. This is bad for cross-strait relations. We do not accept such treatment."
Ma said the government would do its best to safeguard the country's sovereignty and security, and uphold the people's dignity.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Timothy Yang said Taiwan had protested to the WHO through its representative office in Geneva. Yang also said Taiwan would protest in writing and ask allies to speak up for Taiwan at the World Health Assembly (WHA). The WHA is the decision-making body of the WHO.
