Cabinet Ministers

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and a steady stream of potential cabinet ministers arrived at Rideau Hall on Wednesday morning, where Harper was to announce his front bench.

Among those spotted by journalists staking out the viceregal's home were former ministers Peter MacKay, Tony Clement, Leona Aglukkaq, Bev Oda, Jason Kenney, Christian Paradis, James Moore and Julian Fantino.

Maxime Bernier, who was turfed from his foreign affairs post in 2007 in the wake of a scandal involving his then-girlfriend, Julie Couillard, is also present for the ceremony.

Other Quebecers present — of which there aren't many in the Conservative caucus — include Bernard Valcourt and Denis Lebel.

Six portfolios have been left vacant by ministers who either retired or weren't re-elected May 2.

Reports have suggested John Baird will likely be made Canada's new foreign affairs minister, while Tony Clement will leave industry to take up the treasury board post.

One newcomer poised to get a post is Joe Oliver, a Toronto-area investment dealer who defeated longtime Liberal Joe Volpe.

An unexpected arrival Wednesday morning was Tim Uppal, an Edmonton business man first elected in 2008.

It should, however, be noted that while most MPs who attend the ceremony do so because they are getting a post, it's not guaranteed.
