Sweta Mohanty

History has been made in this year's civil services results. In a rare first, the top two candidates are women.

Topper S Divyadharshini is an alumnus of the Dr Ambedkar Law University in Chennai. Sweta Mohanty, who did her B Tech in computer science from the Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering and Technology, Hyderabad, came second.

R V Varun Kumar, a student of Chennai's Ragas Dental College, topped among the male candidates and came overall third. M Arvind, an IT professional, also from the city, came eighth. In all, 98 students from Tamil Nadu have cleared the civil services exams — out of the total 920 — and found a place in the 24 all India services.

The state has never had it so good. Though TN's representation in the IAS has been on the rise, performance has never been better. Job security and a desire for public service are drawing more students, mostly from the mofussil regions, to the administrative services, say Chennai's academicians.
